The Chinatown Gateway (once the largest of its kind in the U.S.) was proposed by CCBA, which is now restoring Burnside’s official entrance to Old Town Chinatown for a summer re-reveal.

When Portland’s Chinatown Gateway was dedicated in 1986, it was the largest paifang in the United States. Proposed by the Oregon Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, built in Taiwan, and raised over Burnside in one week, the gate became the official entrance to Old Town Chinatown—and a symbol of heritage, pride, and renewal. This summer, CCBA will unveil its careful restoration.
